The chaos is over. The conversation is done, the door is shut, you are sitting in the car. And still nothing is over in your body: your heart keeps pounding, your shoulders are up, as if something else were about to come.

That is what this exercise is for. You breathe in and hum on the way out. That's it. In the app, Lower your pulse guides you through the rounds, with rhythm and tone. Here is the same exercise to read up on.

One thing up front, because it decides the choice: humming is quiet, but audible. This exercise needs a moment without an audience. Among people, take Calm down quietly: nobody sees or hears that one.

Why it works

Humming does two things at once, which is why it is faster than counting breaths.

The tone lengthens the exhale by itself. As long as you are humming you are breathing out, without counting anything. That long exhale is the part that switches you to calm via the vagus nerve.

The vibration acts directly. The tone makes your throat, chest and face resonate. That vibration stimulates the vagus nerve mechanically, on top of the breathing. It also means you feel the exercise in your body, not just as an instruction in your head.

And there is something many neurodivergent people know already: humming is one of the most common forms of self-regulation there is. Plenty of people do it without noticing when things get to be too much. The exercise only makes it deliberate.

What it gives you

It gets your body out of the aftershock. Six rounds take a good minute, after which your pulse is noticeably calmer and your shoulders come down by themselves.

What it is not: inconspicuous. And it is not a bedtime ritual either. If you are lying in bed at night, For falling asleep is the exercise for that.
