There are days when you are not in a crisis and still empty. Everything worked, everything was held together, everything got done on the side. And by the evening there is nothing left.

This exercise is made for that kind of emptiness. It is the longest in the collection and the only one that is not there to take a peak off but to refill something. Five seconds in, five seconds out, with no pauses in between. In the app, Relax deeply guides you through the rounds. Here is the same exercise to read up on.

Why it works

At around six breaths per minute something measurable happens in the body: breathing and heartbeat couple together. Your heart rate rises slightly as you breathe in and slows as you breathe out. When your breath hits exactly that rhythm, the two swing together. It is called the resonance frequency, and for most people it sits at almost exactly five seconds in, five seconds out.

In that state heart-rate variability rises, meaning the body's ability to move flexibly between tension and recovery. That is precisely what flattens out after long days.

What makes this easier for many people than box breathing or 4-7-8: there is no holding. For everyone who finds breath holds pressuring, the even flow is more comfortable, and it works just as well.

What it gives you

Recovery without decision work. No choices, no evaluating, no thinking about the right technique. Three minutes of swinging along, that is the whole task.

What it is not: an emergency brake. If things are escalating right now, this is too slow. Take Stop stress fast then, and this exercise later, when there is room again.
