Supermarket checkout, waiting room, parents' evening. Too many people, too much noise, and you can't leave. That is exactly the situation this exercise is for: nobody can tell you are doing it.

It is called box breathing because the rhythm walks around a square. Four seconds in, four hold, four out, four hold. In the app, Calm down quietly guides you along that shape. Here is the same exercise to read up on, so you can do it when you don't want your phone in your hand.

Why it works

The equal length is the point. When inhale and exhale are the same length with a pause between them, your breath slows down by itself, without you having to "breathe deeply". Your body reads that rhythm as an all-clear and the vagus nerve switches to calm: heart rate down, tension down.

The counting does more than keep time. It occupies exactly the part of your head that would otherwise be running the catastrophe. Four numbers are few enough to hold on to in sensory chaos, and enough that no thought carousel fits beside them.

And the decisive part in public: nothing visible happens. No audible exhale, no posture, no hand on the belly. You are just standing there.

What it gives you

It takes you down two or three steps without leaving the room. Eight rounds take about two minutes. After that your pulse is calmer and you can listen again instead of only enduring.

What it is not: fast. If things are tipping right now and you have seconds, take Stop stress fast. Box breathing needs its two minutes and gives you steadier ground in return.

Step by step

1. Stand or sit exactly as you are

A person standing calmly, feet planted.

No special posture, no hand anywhere. If you can, put your feet flat on the floor and let your shoulders drop once. That was the preparation.
