It happens right in the middle of other people. The parents' evening is going on, the supermarket is buzzing, and suddenly you're behind glass: you hear everything and yet you're no longer there. No drama visible from outside, but inside the thread has snapped.
For exactly this state there is one of the oldest exercises in stress and trauma therapy: 5-4-3-2-1. In the app, Come back to now guides you through the five senses, with one calm image per sense. Here is the same exercise to read up on, because its biggest advantage is this: you can do it completely without your phone, and nobody can tell you're doing it.
Why it works
When the system is overloaded, attention pulls inward: into circling thoughts, into tension, into a foggy feeling. The exercise reverses that movement. It gives your attention five concrete, small tasks pointing outward, one per sense.
This is not distraction, it is orientation: the brain gets one piece of evidence after another that the space around you is ordinary and safe. Seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling, tasting come deliberately in that order, from coarse to fine. And because you are counting and searching, your mind stays occupied without you having to fight the thoughts directly.
What it gives you
It brings you back into the room in one to two minutes, without you having to leave it. Afterwards you are not rested, but you are reachable again: you can answer your child, finish the shopping, carry on the conversation.
In the app the exercise also exists as a round with your child: then you ask each other the questions, like a small searching game.
