Using the diagnosis waiting time well, instead of just waiting

  • Waiting times of one to two years are not rare, but the time doesn't have to be lost time.
  • Much of what helps your child doesn't depend on a finished label: adjust daily life, learn tools, observe.
  • Dead waiting time becomes prepared time, and that makes the day of the assessment easier.

People often wait a very long time for an assessment appointment. That's bitter. But the waiting time doesn't have to be lost time, quite the opposite.

You took the step, sought help, asked for an appointment, and then comes the sentence that sucks the air out of the room: “The next free appointment is in eighteen months.” Be honestly prepared: people often wait many months for an assessment appointment, not rarely one to two years, in specialised centres sometimes even longer. In Austria, waiting times of up to two years are sadly not unusual, and in Germany and Switzerland too, many months are the rule.

That's not your fault, but the consequence of an overloaded system. And it explicitly does not mean you can do nothing until then. On the contrary: much of what helps your child doesn't depend on a finished label at all.

What you can already do now, entirely without a diagnosis

  • Adjust daily life. You don't need a report to lower stimulation, make routines visible and announce transitions. What helps, helps, even without a diagnosis. A calmer morning is possible today, not only in two years.
  • Gather observations. Note over weeks: what happens, when, how often, in which situations. This log makes the later diagnostics enormously easier, because the professional gets not just a snapshot but a pattern. At the same time, writing brings order to your own gut feeling.
  • Learn first tools. What to do with overstimulation, what in a meltdown, what with transitions. These tools work immediately and independently of the later outcome. Step by step you'll become more confident in handling the difficult moments.
  • Get on waiting lists in parallel. Ask whether you can already put yourself on therapy waiting lists now, for instance for occupational therapy or speech therapy. Many lists run independently of the final diagnosis, so you lose no time.
  • Win allies in your environment. A good conversation with nursery or school can ease daily life even before the diagnosis. Describe concretely what helps, such as a quiet spot or an announced change.
