Why your observations matter at the appointment

  • The professional sees your child for two hours. You see them every day.
  • Concrete everyday scenes say more than any memory under stress.
  • A few seconds per moment are enough. Many small notes become a pattern.

Waiting for an assessment appointment often feels like standing still. Months in which seemingly nothing happens. But one thing can quietly work for you during this time: your observations.

At the appointment, the professional sees your child for an hour or two. You see them every day. At breakfast, after school, at bedtime, in the middle of a storm. Nothing can replace that knowledge. It has just one problem: under tension, nobody remembers everything. That is exactly what notes taken beforehand are for.

Why the assessment room does not show everything

An assessment never rests on a single source. Conversations with you, questionnaires, direct contact with your child: everything flows together. And still, the examination situation has a weakness. Neurodivergent children in particular often present differently in an unfamiliar, quiet room than at home. Some hold themselves together especially hard there, others are wound up by the new surroundings. Both can distort the picture.

Your everyday observations balance that out. They are not a nice add-on, they are a central part of the assessment. With them, the professional gets not just a snapshot but a pattern across weeks.

What makes a good observation

Concrete scenes say more than judgements. Not "he is always so restless" but "at dinner he gets up about five times, playing on the weekend hardly at all". A useful note captures:

  • When and where it happened.
  • What came before. Transitions, noise, hunger, a long day: the key is often here.
  • How it showed and for how long.
  • What helped. That belongs in the picture too, because it shows what your child can already do.
