Some tension only becomes noticeable when you let it go. The jaw is one of those. Under stress many people clench their teeth without noticing: while working, in the car, waiting outside school, and at night anyway. Measured against its size, the jaw muscle is one of the strongest in the body. When it works all day, you eventually feel it as pressure in your head, a stiff neck, tiredness without a reason.
This exercise releases exactly that spot, from the inside out. In the app, Loosen your jaw takes you through seven calm steps. Here is the same exercise to read up on.
Why it works
Face, jaw and neck are tied to the nervous system more closely than most other muscles. Facial expression is part of the alarm system: tension in the face signals to the body that something is still going on. When the face softens, the rest often follows by itself: shoulders, breath, pulse.
Plus a very practical point: the jaw cannot be relaxed on command. "Just loosen up" does little for a muscle that has been holding on for hours. What helps is the order of this exercise: first notice, then release the tongue, then let the jaw hang. The letting go comes through attention, not through will.
What it gives you
Two minutes, after which the face is softer and the head often clearer. And over time something more important: during the day you notice earlier when you are holding on again. That is the real gain, not the single session.
What it is not: a treatment. If you grind at night, have pain in the jaw joint or it clicks when opening, that belongs with a dentist. This exercise does not replace that; it can sit alongside it.
