When a child is overwhelmed in class, you are standing there with a whole class and one child in distress. The most important thing often happens before you do anything pedagogically “right”: you get help.

A child screams, throws things, runs out of the room. Or they go completely quiet, stop responding, sit under the desk as if switched off. Both can mean the same thing: the child's nervous system is overloaded. A meltdown is not a tantrum and not a power struggle, and a shutdown is not refusal. In both cases, in that moment, the child does not have full access to self-control, language and weighing things up. That is why reminders, consequences or explanations don't work right now. What helps is safety, calm and time.

Step 1: Get a second adult right away

You cannot be with a child in distress and supervise twenty other children at the same time. And you don't have to. The first and most important step is to get support immediately: the colleague from the classroom next door, the school assistant, the head teacher, the after-school educator. One person stays with the child, the other takes over the class. That protects the child, their classmates and you.

For this to work when it counts, you need a plan that is in place beforehand, not one that only takes shape once things have already escalated:

  • Who gets called? Choose a first and a second contact person who can be reached nearby.
  • How do you call them? An agreed signal, for example a coloured card that a reliable child takes to the room next door or to the school office, or a quick phone call.
  • Who does what? Who stays with the child, who takes over the class, who informs the parents. The clearer this is in advance, the calmer the moment itself will be.
