PDA: when even a friendly request is too much

A child who was happily drawing yesterday refuses to draw today, because now it is a task. They distract, negotiate, invent excuses, turn the situation into a role play. If the pressure rises, withdrawal or a meltdown follows. The reward system works for a week, then not at all. A consequence leads to escalation. Many educators experience a child like this as provocative. Often something quite different lies behind it.
What PDA means
PDA stands for Pathological Demand Avoidance. The profile was described by the British developmental psychologist Elizabeth Newson from the 1980s onwards, based on children who did not fit any of the usual categories. Today PDA is mostly understood as a profile on the autism spectrum. Because many of the people concerned find the word “pathological” demeaning, parts of the autistic community use the phrase “Persistent Drive for Autonomy”, an ongoing need for self-determination.
The core: it is not the content of a task that triggers the resistance, but the fact that it is a demand. This also applies to things the child actually likes doing, and even to demands from their own body, such as eating or going to the toilet. According to current understanding, the driver is anxiety, above all the fear of losing control. The nervous system reacts to a request as if it were a threat. That is not a decision but a panic response.
